Preparation of an Emergency School Reconstruction project
Project context
In 1993 an earthquake destroyed partly or completely 1256 schools in Egypt. African Development Bank financed the rehabilitation of approximately 100 schools and needed support in the assessment of the magnitude and type of damage caused to the school buildings by the earthquake.
Activities
- Assessment of damage caused by the earthquake to approximately 100 schools
- The planning of the rehabilitation of approximately 100 schools: visiting, documenting and estimating damages with recommendations for possible rehabilitation or demolition and new construction
- In some cases sketches for rehabilitation and supplementary new construction on the sites by an architect and sketches for detail repair by a structural engineer

Results: Documented information of the need for rehabilitation and new construction to the African Development Bank for further appraisal and loan preparation
Impacts: Support to approximately 100 schools to continue education activities
