Programme appraisal document for the basic education subsector investment programme (BESSIP)

Project context

In 1999 the quality of school buildings, the supply of educational materials, the readiness and numbers of teachers and the instruction time afforded to children were inadequate in Zambia, causing stagnated enrollment, dropout, increased repetition rates and poor performance on standardized tests. To improve these issues the government developed the Basic Education Sub-Sector Investment Programme (BESSIP).

 Activities

Finngroup Consultants was instrumental as an infrastructure consultant of FINNIDA in the preparation of the programme appraisal document on a proposed credit in the amount of SDR 28.5 million (USD 40 million) from the World Bank to the Republic of Zambia in support of the first phase of the BESSIP. Finngroup Consultants developed especially calculations for the expenses of the construction of school buildings.
